SUMMARY:Introduction to Fracture Mechanics Analysis for Fatigue Cracks in B
 ridges
DESCRIPTION:The webinar is designed to introduce attendees to the theory be
hind the application of fracture mechanics (FM) principles for the analysi
s of fatigue cracks in bridge details. This will be discussed within the c
ontext of bridge management decision-making.\n\n\n\nAreas that will be cov
ered will include:\n\n\nIntroduction to the process of fatigue (crack init
iation and crack propagation behaviour)\nIntroduction to fracture mechanic
 s (Linear Elastic FM\, stress magnification factors\, fracture toughness)\
nIntroduction to fatigue analysis of cracks (Paris law\, typical values fo
r FM parameters\, prediction of fatigue life)\nFracture mechanics and brid
ge management (Example of the application of fracture mechanics for mainte
nance planning)\n\n\nPresenters\n\nDr Boulent Imam is a Senior Lecturer in
Civil Engineering Structures at the Department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering in the University of Surrey (England) and Programme Director
for the MSc Programme in Bridge Engineering. He has been extensively invol
ved in the area of fatigue of bridges\, carrying out research in this area
collaborating with national and European infrastructure owners and manage
rs\, such as Network Rail\, Highways England\, TWI. His research has contr
ibuted towards in-depth understanding of the fatigue behaviour of riveted
railway bridges and developed methods for more reliable quantification of
their remaining fatigue life taking into account historical rail traffic\,
novel fatigue assessment methods\, loading\, resistance and modelling unc
ertainties as well as system effects. Later on\, Dr imam extended his work
on fatigue towards developing fracture mechanics guidelines for the asses
sment of fatigue crack growth in steel bridge details towards the optimisa
tion of inspection and maintenance planning in steel bridges. Recently\, D
r Imam research has expanded towards understanding the potential impacts o
f climate change on bridge deterioration and quantifying the resilience of
bridge infrastructure against extreme events.\n\nFormat\n\nThere will be
opportunity to interact with the lecturer throughout the session\, both th
ough allocated Q&A sessions\, or leaving text based questions throughout t
he presentation which the lecturer will be able to answer at convenient op
portunities. The format of this event will be a webinar using "Zoom Webinar
s".\n\nPrice\n\nThe cost of registering for this webinar will be £105+VAT
.\n\nFor more information on registration click here!
